Creating a Custom Benchmarking Report
On July 14, Alix Patterson wrote an article on CreditUnions.com about how to create 1st mortgage benchmarking report. The data discussed in the article is one of a handful of "Lending Scorecards" we created using Peer-to-Peer.
Peer Users can access these reports by downloading this file. Unzip the file and save the LendingScorecard.CRC to your desktop. Next, open Peer-to-Peer and go to File-Import-Custom Displays. Browse to find the file you just downloaded and import to your "My Displays" section of Peer-to-Peer.

Mortgage Modifications
Call report data on modified mortgages has been available for the past few years. We've put together five graphs showing how you can use the data to examine your modified mortgages against peers. Because the data is relatively new, the majority of the graphs will show flat up until the third quarter of 2008.
Member Business Lending
While growth in the overall lending portfolio remains flat, certain components and loan offerings continue to experience success. Member business lending continues to show growth.
As of the end of June 2010, the 7,434 credit unions included in the FirstLook program reported total outstanding member business loan balances of $29.6 billion. This represented an increase of 9.5% from the balances these same credit unions reported in the previous June, making business loans the fastest growing component of the credit union loan portfolio.

Asset Quality
Concerns surrounding asset quality, the allowance for loan losses, and the impact on earnings and capital have increased significantly in the past two years. But did you know that there are now over 230 account codes available to scrutinize delinquency and charge-offs on the 5300 Call Report?
Not sure you want to dive into 230 account codes? Start the process by downloading this custom .CRC file from Callahan & Associates that covers key asset quality ratios.

Non-Interest Income
Analyze your non-interest income with the following custom displays. Review non-interest income/average assets if you are looking at the financials or comparing individual credit unions, as it tends to even out the income curve. Non-interest income/members is a great report to run if you are analyzing member metrics or trying to compare fees between banks and credit unions. Finally, non-interest income/employees is important if you are reviewing productivity metrics (such as loan originations per employee, assets per employee, etc).
